Sona Masoori is a popular variety of medium-grain rice originating from Southeast India. Often referred to as "Bangara Teegalu," which translates to "golden ivy," this rice is characterized by its light, aromatic, and small grains. It contains fewer carbohydrates than other varieties and is naturally free of fat and sodium. While this reduces the energy density of the rice, it is a common choice for individuals managing their carbohydrate intake.

Sona Masoori rice features a wider, shorter grain compared to Basmati rice, measuring approximately 5 mm in length. It is less translucent than long-grain varieties and has a higher starch content. During cooking, this medium-grain rice absorbs significant amounts of liquid, resulting in a soft texture where the grains tend to cling together.

Unlike Basmati, Sona Masoori rice absorbs more flavor from the ingredients it is cooked with. It is an excellent choice for preparing fried rice, porridge, and salads.
